The Beyond Fest-ivities continued last night with a glorious FREE screening of Trick r Treat at the American Legion Theater in Hollywood featuring an introduction and post movie Q&A with writer/director Michael Dougherty. For those who aren’t aware, this beloved once cult status anthology went straight to DVD in 2009, so for many (present company included), it was the first time seeing this Halloween classic on the big screen. Beyond Fest hosted a Trick r Treat event at the Egyptian Theatre back in 2013. Those in attendance were treated to the movie, a panel w/Michael Dougherty, Brian Cox, etc. and the announcement that we would indeed be getting a sequel. Huzzah! Absolutely killer news.
9 years later and still no return of Sam. However, there is a glimmer of horror genre hope on the horizon. All is not lost, fellow monster kids: in September it was announced that Trick r Treat will be released at Regal Cinemas starting October 6th! Then the Beyond Fest X lineup comes out. Not only is Trick r Treat on the list but the screening is free. Fast forward to last night and the popcorn was free too.
YOU MUST SEE TRICK R TREAT IN THEATER! I didn’t think i could love it more than I already did, but wow. And I know, better late than never, but it’s criminal that this immensely popular horror flick is just now getting a cinema run. 1000 screens worldwide is what we heard. When asked about the possibility of Trick r Treat 2 during the post movie chat, Michael Dougherty surprised devoted fans and newcomers alike on the first day of Halloween:
“It is currently in active development. That does mean greenlit. It is in active development. Very active and I hope that we’ll be able to share some more news about that soon. I know it’s cryptic! I know.”
It’s happening! This is not a drill. Kinda. Like a strong maybe. Apparently, a sequel becoming reality is mostly up to us, the fans. GO SEE TRICK R TREAT DURING ITS LONG OVERDUE THEATRICAL RELEASE! As a community of horror fanatics, let’s have our voices heard via the box office. Tickets are only $8 not to mention you’re also helping to keep movie theaters stay in operation. (Save the cinema!)
So remember to wear a costume, hand out treats, never blow out a Jack O’Lantern and ALWAYS check your candy. I’ll see you Mad Monsters at the late-night double feature picture show!
Fun Fact: I rented Trick r Treat back in 2009 and bought that same DVD from 20/20 Video when they closed months later.
