MaXXXine, the final film in director Ti West’s X trilogy, continues the story of adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx, the only survivor of the horrific events that took place in 1979 Texas (once again played my Mia Goth who gives another stunning performance). Now picking up in Hollywood, California, in 1985, we see Maxine closer than ever to becoming a big Hollywood film star.
Things seem to be finally going her way with her new chance at stardom until a sadistic killer starts murdering the starlets of Hollywood. With the mysterious killer on the loose, it leads to two of LAPD’s head detectives (played by Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale) questioning her as they suspect Maxine may know something about the killings or perhaps be involved.
Now not only does Maxine have to worry about LAPD but also a sleazy private investigator (played by Kevin Bacon) who was hired by a mysterious figure to expose Maxine’s dark and haunting past. Now, she must do all she can to fight and navigate her way through everything to survive and achieve her dreams of becoming the movie star she is meant to be.
The film boasts amazing performances all around. Mia Goth once again works her screen magic and gives a phenomenal performance. Other standouts in the film are Kevin Bacon as the sleazy private detective, Moses Sumney, who plays one of Maxine’s close friends and the clerk at the video store, and Halsey as Tabby, one of Maxine’s co-workers at the adult arcade. It also includes fantastic performances by Elizabeth Debicki, Giancarlo Esposito, and Sophie Thatcher.
The film aesthetic of 1980s Hollywood is beautifully done with director Ti West mixing in elements of 80s horror and Italian Giallo films. It sets a tone that makes you feel like you stepped back in time and are in Hollywood in the 1980s. The soundtrack for the film by Tyler Bates, as well as the songs used in the movie, are perfect for the film, with some really great tracks.
The film also has a great PR media campaign going on now in which you text this number (213)-788-1211, which was released in the newest MaXXXine trailer that came out on June 5th, 2024. This is a very cool thing they are doing with trivia and even prizes and special offers given out to members of the fan club.
