It seems David Gordon Green has stepped away from director duties in rebooting The Exorcist franchise. 2023’s Exorcist Believer failed to set the world alight and despite the presence of Ellen Burstyn reprising her role as Chris MacNeil form the original 1973 movie it was unable to generate much interest at the box office.
Still Universal are reportedly looking for a new director to continue their proposed trilogy. Part two will be entitled, Deceiver. Universal reportedly paid $400 million for the rights to the characters created by William Peter Blatty over half a century ago. Presumably in the hope that they could build some sort of demonic universe. So far that gamble does not look like it is paying off. Will they even bother in producing the proposed two sequels? Time will tell.
Ed Whitfield, a film critic friend of William Friedkin who famously directed the 1973 masterpiece stated that in a conversation with the director, Friedkin said that he would return from the grave to “possess David Gordon Green to make his life a living hell”. William Friedkin passed away just two months before Believer (which was widely panned by critics) was released.
