It is on this 5th day of Beyond Fest that I find myself writing my first article that comes off like a Weekly World News headline but I promise you is real. This wild news dump comes to us from Q&As with the writers of Freddy VS Jason and Fede Alavarez who brought us the beautifully bloody Evil Dead 2013. Both these movies (as well as You’re Next) were screened together as a triple feature, but that’s not what you’re here for. You’re here to find out what Ye has to do with anything horror related nevermind Evil Dead.
In the inklings of Fede’s career he made a short film that was shared by Kanye on a “very influential forum” that he ran. It was through this boost that a producer with Warner Bros. found out about and reached out to Fede Alavarez complimenting him on his work.
Even going so far as to offer him a feature. The connection to Kanye wouldn’t really be that key if weren’t for the fact that right after work on the feature in question, Fede acquired the Skype info for Sam Raimi’s assistant, reached out without a scheduled meeting, gave Raimi a 45+ minute pitch through said Skype call, and the rest being history.
So yeah, if you never liked or had respect for Kanye before, it’s okay to admit that the minor part he played in Fede’s early career lead to one of the grossest fucking movies to have ever been released. This ties in very well to a question I got to ask which led to writers Damian Shannon & Mark Swift spilling a pretty cool exclusive!
“So what’s the deal with Freddy VS Jason VS Ash?” was what I asked inquiring about all of the very different drafts of this film they said they wrote. They acknowledged it as the comic series that it is and that it had no connection to anything they were working on with Freddy VS Jason… Except for what they’re currently working on with Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi! The two writers revealed that after he is officially done with Doctor Strange 2 (which I iterate the recent state of in my Danny Elfman article), that he is positioning himself to return to direct horror.
This will make Sam Raimi’s first feature length horror film he directed since Drag Me to Hell (2009). A great triple feature met only by a couple of really crazy and cool news drops! I’ll have my reviews of the other Beyond Fest films (Halloween Kills, V/H/S 94, Titane, Lamb, and more) sometime after I see the closing film of the festival Antlers…
