So, this movie is not and will not be in my top ten. It was more dramatic than it was scary. I also found it hard to separate it from the Slender Man attacks. The real-life story is far more terrifying than what Mercy Black attempted to recreate on the screen. Personally, creating a whole new urban legend when there was already one to base it on, kind of made the movie fall apart for me. You have the real-life fear that is already built into the Slender Man story, but instead, they have to try and create this new fear from the ground up, and with only two hours, most of that got lost. What does Mercy Black even look like? You don’t get a good understanding of the monster until the end of the movie, and by then, I really didn’t care.
With all that said, I enjoyed the parallels between the movie and the real-life case. Deciding to focus more on the aftermath of the attack and following one of the attackers as an adult was a really good choice. Seeing how the main character struggles to step back into normal life was a really good mix. Now, I do feel they missed a good story with the older girl that seemed to have forced them all into the original crime, but the twist at the end was well done. I would love to see a good movie about the Slender Man crime, but it doesn’t seem like Hollywood ever plans on giving us one.
On an unrelated note, that nephew would have gotten throat punched if he kept being creepy. Hiding in closets and hovering over people…don’t do that #stopcreepykids
