It’s no secret that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (TCM) is my favorite horror film of all time. Since August 2018, when Legendary Pictures purchased the rights to the TCM franchise, I have been closely following the developments.
Legendary Pictures has attached Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) as the producer with Rodolfo Sayagues through their company Bad Hombre. Kim Henkel, Ian Henkel, and Pat Cassidy of Exurbia Films are also producing.
Andy Tohill and Ryan Tohill are attached as the director. Chris Thomas Devlin is penning the script.
This leaves me with two questions:
Will they film TCM reboot in Texas?
I know that sounds like a crazy question. Of course, they should film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot in Texas. But you never know. Millennium Films filmed Leatherface, the TCM prequel, in Bulgaria.
Who will play Leatherface?
This is a profoundly important question. The success of the movie depends largely on this one casting decision. The wrong Leatherface could cause the film to fail. The right Leatherface could have the horror community running to the theaters.
Since the announcement of the reboot, I have been pondering who would be the right choice.
The Illuminerdi released casting details for the new Leatherface. Legendary Pictures is looking for a 60-year-old Leatherface “characterized as having a big build.”
A 60-year-old Leatherface?
One name immediately came to mind, Kane Hodder.
Kane is widely known for portraying horror icon Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988), Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989), Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993), and Jason X (2001). In addition to Jason, Kane has portrayed serial killers Ed Gein and Dennis Rader, the BTK killer. One could argue that Kane has killed more people on film than any other actor.
He even donned the Leatherface’s mask in Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990).
This makes Kane Hodder the most logical choice to portray Leatherface.
We checked in with Kane, who is staying in KILLER shape at his home gym!
When asked if he would be interested in trading in his machete for the saw for a while and this is what Kane said….
“I’d love to play Leatherface; I’ve always loved the character. I got the chance to slip into that skin for a brief time when I stunt doubled for RA, as Leatherface in TCM III, and it felt right. Everyone knows I’m not done killing motherfuckers!”
A Kane Hodder Leatherface would send the horror community into a frenzy. It would gain some positive traction for the new reboot. Horror fans are very skeptical about the TCM reboot. A Kane Hodder Leatherface would calm the skeptics, give credibility to the film, and honor the legacy of the character.
My advice to Legendary Pictures and Fede Alvarez is to reach out to Kane. Tell him, Sgt. Horror sent you.
