For the better chunk of 2019, a short I helped produce acted as my method of entry to several film festivals, including Chicago’s very own Cinepocalypse. Of all the stuff I got to see at Music Box Theatre, one particular film was blazed in my mind. Was it Verotika? Was it Satanic Panic (which I also got to PA on)? Was it Total Recall on 70mm? Honestly, it was Budfoot.
I first met the Best Short Film Award winner in the very same short film block our team was slated. It took less than a minute into Budfoot’s 16-minute duration to understand that what I was seeing was in a unique league. The league I would ramble to anyone I could call, text, or physically squawk to as a must-see. In years past, when you see a short film at a film festival, that’s usually the last time you get to see it. With much gratitude to distribution platforms like Alter, Budfoot has been publicly revealed to mindfuck the world on a very fitting 4/20/2020 release.
I urge you to take the trip over to Alter’s Youtube channel and let the real trip begin. The rest of this is a recounting of what I believe to be my favorite short I got to see in 2019
Revolving around Wonder Goblin’s creation of the same name, Budfoot has been willed into existence by directors Tim Reis & James Sizemore, and production company Media Team based in Atlanta. Heavy Metal artist Skinner (love this choice!) is our toy-making protagonist who works in a visual whirlwind of neon and blacklight. When the fumes of a nearby gas tank fill the air, the Budfoot comes alive through the voice of Henry Zebrowski and brilliant puppeteering. Combine all of the above with some kickass cinematography and VFX, and you’ll see a good fucking time in Budfoot!
If you have seen it and are itching to have a Budfoot of your own, Wonder Goblin has recently devised a “Tangerine Dream” open edition of the little guy on his online shop. Speaking of open, that ending truly does beg for more Budfoot, and I am here for it. Share the short with your friends, and let’s get the word out!
