To make an Evil Dead Movie the original’s Writer/Director Sam Raimi, has three rules…
Innocents must suffer.
You have to taste blood to be a hero.
The Dead must Rise!
With that being said, writer/director Lee Cronin (The Hole In The Ground) over achieves with this latest installment in the franchise. Evil Dead Rise, takes the horror out of the Woods and into an Urban setting. Specifically a run down apartment block which is due to be knocked down within days.
There are only a few remaining tenants, hanging in there before the inevitable. A family, Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) plus her three kids Danny (Morgan Davies) Bridgette (Gabrielle Echols) and Kassie (Nell Fisher) are joined by Ellie’s sister Beth (Lilly Sullivan) who has been out of the picture for a while. Not knowing Ellie is about to become homeless or that her husband has recently left her and the kids. Beth’s surprise visit comes just in time, as all hell is about to break loose. An earthquake not only traps them in the apartment block but also opens up a hole in the ground where a dusty old book is discovered…
Typically the number one goal of an Evil Dead movie is to entertain. The Demonic darkness is often mixed with a healthy dose of black comedy, so things don’t get too bleak. The last two outings for the franchise, 2013’s Evil Dead directed by Fede Alvarez and now Rise take a more vicious approach. The scares definitely outnumber the laughs but that is by no means a bad thing. Where Evil Dead Rise really excels, is in its extremely bloody set pieces. Which keep on coming, before you yourself might feel drenched in blood just watching it. For fans of the franchise it delivers a gore soaked thrill ride for newbies…. don’t say you haven’t been warned.
