After one hundred and twenty six years, fascination in Bram Stokers Count Dracula shows no sign of waning. So much so that we are expecting not one but two big screen adventures for the Lord of the undead this year starting with the legendary Nicolas Cage donning the cape, fangs and lots of rings in Universals Splatstick horror/comedy Renfield.
Then later on in August, Universal will also invite us to join the crew of the Demeter, a Russian Schooner with a very specific private cargo of twenty four coffins. The story will elaborate on a single chapter from Stokers classic story “The Captains Log” as the crew attempt to survive the ocean voyage and whatever is stalking them each night as they sail from Carpathia to London. Writer Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room) wrote the original screenplay back in 2002 and the movie has been in development hell for over two decades. Finally Norwegian director André Øvredal (TrollHunter, The Autopsy Of Jane Doe) got behind the camera and with a cast which includes David Dastmalchian ( Dune, The Suicide Squad ) Liam Cunningham ( Game of Thrones) and Javier Botet ( IT, The Conjuring 2) as the Count. 2023 is sure shaping up to be a fangtastic year for everyones favorite bloodsucker, making a welcome return once again to the big screen.
