The night I write this is the night that two of the more beloved fast characters in my life strike a wild impression on me. First of all, you will not have a better movie going experience than watching a Sonic film with Sonic fans because they are what Marvel fans proclaim they are. Case in point I joined a dementedly cringe choir of children and BIG children in my makeshift Sonic crop-top and yellow/blue nails as we screamed our heads off at the post credits tease for the next film.
Before we get there (I’m going to talk about it), I must compliment the writers and Natasha Rothwell for delivering a storyline in a cg heavy franchise building film that’s so good, it honestly outshined the movie I was excited to see. A bride’s wedding goes awry when it’s revealed her husband to be is a GUN agent who was only with her to get closer to Sonic. I didn’t know I needed a romcom spinoff sandwiched in this sequel until I got it. Genuinely impressive stuff!
A piece of promo material of Idris Elba’s Knuckles talking combined with talking with a friend who streamed a leaked copy of the movie had me worried that the echidna was going to be a problem on a vocal level, but I was pleasantly surprised with Idris’s performance throughout the film. Colleen O’ Shaughnessey’s Tails performance was perfect and really tied the team together. Which, by the way, they totally have a Sonic Heroes style team-up against a Chaos Emerald consumed Dr. Robotnik who moshes to Walk by Pantera.
You read that correctly, Dr. Robotnik moshes in the Death Egg to Dimebag Darrell’s opening riff to Walk. I can totally understand why Jim Carrey’s stepping away from acting. That might be his best moment ever captured of film if I’m being quite honest…
And somewhere along the way we go Super Sonic in the final confrontation yaddayaddayadda, but we gotta get into the post credits tease now. After the romcom style setup with Gun being introduced, I had a feeling of what to expect but I was among the first in the theater to properly freakout when one of the agents began to talk about uncovering a file that’s over 50 years old. You know where this is going… IT’S FUCKING SHADOW!
I’m gonna see that movie so many more times you have no idea. Also if anyone wants my own private edit of the first film from 2020 I made including music from the games (something #2 severely lacks) dm me 🙂
Okay so why am I addressing the Snyderverse in the same breath as the blue blur? After I tweeted about liking Sonic 2 I found through Twitter that Warner Bros. has been having emergency meetings focused on rethinking their strategy for upcoming films to feature the Flash. For those who aren’t caught up, Ezra Miller (whom Zack Snyder introduced us to as The Flash) had a police report filed against them March 28th after reportedly getting aggressive in a karaoke bar with a couple of the patrons. Upon being charged for both accounts with a $500 bail, a domino effect of reports of unfavorable on-the-street and on-set encounters with the speedster came to light in the same time frame.
As I write this DC came upfront with the news that they have indefinitely paused their plans to release any works with Ezra Miller attached. Seeing how the most anticipated of these works involves Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton’s respective departure and reunion portraying Batman, I find it to be a safe bet that Snyder fans can expect the Snyderverse to be iced. It’s worth noting that these are the same fans that, only weeks ago, rallied together to get Zack Snyder’s Justice League a fan voted ‘Best Moment’ during the Oscars. The moment ironically was Ezra Miller entering the speed force…
If Sonic and the Flash were to ever race, there would only be one winner, and that winner would celebrate with a chili dog. The Knuckles spinoff series to come from Paramount + is but a victory lap…
