For 2022 I wanted to make sure I consumed more books. So to kick things off, I got my claws on a novel that I had wanted to read ever since, seeing its rather captivating cover illustration.
An Epic Tale of Medieval Horror sounded exactly what I needed to distract from the New Year Blues. I wasn’t disappointed! Christopher Buehlman is already quite revered in our community as an author with Those Across the River, The Blacktongue Thief, and his segment for Shudders revival Creepshow series… The Man In The Suitcase, amongst others. But this was the first time I was coming across him.
His tale of A Knight, A Priest, and a young Orphaned Girl making their way across plague-ridden medieval France is certainly cinematic and a true page-turner. The Monsters are plentiful and the creepiness palpable. His chapter entitled, Of Delphine and of the Scarecrow stood out as a master class in fear-inducing writing. The characters have a lot of depth, and the imagination to which some of the set pieces play out is extremely impressive. If you’re looking for a tasty little title to tuck into, you are certainly in for a treat.
Have any of you read any of Christopher’s other novels? Let us know what you think, and if you have any other recommendations for books, I should get to know.
