Over the past few months, there has been lots of speculation over who will be in the new Scream 5 reboot from Spyglass Media Group. There was even lots of talk of Scream 5 at the Mad Monster Party Scream Panel. Now we can confirm that David Arquette will reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley.
Arquette told Deadline: “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new. Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.”
In late 2019, Spyglass Media Group acquired the rights to make a new Scream. The production company has been in talks with Neve Campbell in reprising her role as Sidney Prescott. What is interesting is that IMDB already lists Neve Campbell as being in the cast. Matthew Lillard has even expressed an interest in returning to the franchise.
Plot details for the new Scream 5 are being kept secret. The official synopsis in IMDB describes the film as “a new installment of the ‘Scream’ horror franchise will follow a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes.” Could the woman returning be Sidney Prescott?
While all the details are unclear. What we do know if that David Arquette will be Sheriff Dewey Riley. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will co-write the script. Paul Neinstein and William Sherak are producing. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct.
Production will take place in Wilmington, North Carolina after COVID-19 safety protocols are put in place.
