Wanna know what happens when you put Genndy Tartakovsky inspired animation and the recently released Doom Eternal in a blender?
Buckle the fuck up and find out.
I remember looking a bit onto YouTube about Bathesda’s recent pirate-friendly blunder in the release of the somewhat anticipated first-person shooter Doom Eternal (which don’t get me wrong, looks very fun). I had my laughs, I passed out, and waking up to my recommendations tab being nothing but other community-driven content inspired by the recent revival of the Doom franchise. This diamond in the rough was not at all what I expected in light of YouTube’s algorithms not being kind, particularly to animators. In addition to the companion video Doom – Animated, 99BrickStudios put together a most unholy union I didn’t know I needed more of.
One thing I adore more than most things in life is visuals being choreographed with music. The intro delivers just that on such a note that you’d expect there to already be a season of this to exist. The music welded together from Bathesda’s Doom composer Mick Gordon’s score and watching the beloved Doom Slayer rip and tear with a bunny on his shoulder is done in such a unique way. So much so that I successfully redirected my energy from refreshing Twitter’s trending tab to hitting the replay button on these videos. There’s even a particular sequence that is seemingly inspired by a sequence in the intro for Adventure Time, but it’s just pulled off so much better here.
You can see inspiration come through in the animation/art direction, though this project led by Henri Giesen is very much it’s own beast with this overall hella fun combination of the arts. I saw these two beautiful videos the whole team put together and immediately had to get the word out for any and all horror, animation, and Doom enthusiasts who may be missing out.
I could only imagine how long the animation we each come to know and love takes to come together, but I’d like to think that we’ll be getting more of Doom: The Animated Series soon. I’d like to wrap things up by sharing the second video, which was how I was lucky enough to come across this whole thing, and now you are too. If you like what you’re about to see, subscribe to 99BrickStudios, and let them know you want more!
